eBay Success Tips (Feb 2005)

The Title Of Your Listing is the MOST Important Thing!

**********************

eBay is, in one sense, like the classified advertising section of your local newspaper. You scan the listing titles looking for something of interest. Here, however, you can use the "Search" feature to limit the titles to ones that interest you. Once you do, there is still a lot of work to be done because so many eBay advertisers do not know how to write an effective listing title.

The first thing you will have to do is weed out all the titles that contain one or more of your search terms, but which have nothing to do with your desired topic. These are titles that are too broad.

Next you have to find the titles that seem to be describing just what you are interested in. This can take some time. Most eBay sellers (at least the less successful ones) do not write effective, focused titles. Try this. On your next search write down a dozen or so of the titles that catch your eye. Now ask yourself why each of them stood out from all the rest.

Was it because of the detail presented? Was it because of the features included in the title? Was it because of a bonus or free shipping listed in the title? You can learn a lot from looking at what others do. Here are some words and phrases I have "thrown in" to titles that greatly increased the response over the same listing without these "extra" words.

Free batteries. Free shipping. Includes Bonus.
+ Surprise! No Reserve! Last One! Brand New. Original Owner. Includes Manual. w/ orig box. w/ warranty card. Works Great! Never Used.

Some of my competitors were listing the same item at the same price and were also including the manual. Or the item was being sold by the original owner, etc. But you had to read their ad to find out that fact and you only had to read the title to my ad to find out!

The prime rule in writing your eBay listing (or any other ad) is "Tell More To Sell More". The same rule applies to your title. The more information you can put in the title to make it stand out from all other titles, the greater the odds that YOUR ad will be read instead of someone else's.
